Family Camping Fun
If you've ever wistfully told your offspring stories about your own childhood summers spent at camp, swimming, hiking, playing games, and singing around the campfire, you'll be happy to learn that your camp days don't have to be relegated to a fond memory. You can pack the entire family up and head off to camp this summer if you want!
According to the American Camp Association (ACA), family camps are becoming an increasingly popular way to spend a vacation. Over the past 15 years, in fact, there has been a 215 percent increase in the number of accredited camps reporting family camping activity.
Family camps offer an opportunity for younger children not quite ready for an independent camp experience to enjoy what group camping has to offer. Many family camps have separate activities for children and adults, with families reuniting at meal times or at the end of the day.
Other camps offer a unique family bonding experience over the traditional camp fare of sports, lake activities, arts and crafts, and of course, campfires. There are also specialty camps offering weight loss education (along with healthy meals) or a focus on activities such as horseback riding, yoga, or performing arts.
Most family camps are offshoots of traditional camps, generally lasting from a weekend to a week or two. Some of them are held during the camp "off-season." Prices range from about $700 for a church based camp to as much as $4,000 for a resort-style camp for a family of four.
You can also check with your church or synagogue, your local parks and recreation department, or the YMCA for ideas.
