Family Summer Camps Becoming Very Popular

One of the biggest new trends in summer camps is for an entire family to attend a session together, according to the American Camp Association.

The ACA, the group that accredits summer camps, reports a 215 percent increase in the number of camps offering family programs over the past fifteen years.

Many of the adults are in the 30 to 45 years-old range. They usually enjoyed summer camp as children and now want to share that experience with their own offspring. Such parents often enroll in family programs at the same camps they attended as children. Some camps have serviced families for three and four generations.

Bette Bussel, executive director of the ACA, said that most camps offer family camping at the end of their usual youth season.

In most programs, families share cabin facilities but often split up into different age-appropriate activities. Children may do arts and crafts while adults participate in yoga and cheese tasting. However, there are usually activities that a family can enjoy together such as swimming, campfires, movies, drama and hiking. There is even a family weight loss camp, Wellspring Family Camp in Michigan, where overweight children ages 5 to 13 years old attend with parents or grandparents for one or two-week sessions.
