Fewer Teens Holding Summer Jobs


Less than 49% of American teenagers have a summer job – a figure that shows a 60% decline since the year 2000, according to the U.S. Labor Department. This is the first time since the Department has been keeping records that there are more unemployed teenagers than those with summer jobs.

However, upper-income teens – those came from households with incomes of at least $75,000 — were more likely to have summer jobs.

A spokesperson for the Labor Department said that today's teens are spending more time in summer school or in other educational pursuits than at summer jobs.
