Kids' Programs at Hotels Increase Occupancy, Profits

More resorts and hotels are offering children's camps because it is good business, according to a report in the San Diego Business Journal.

The camps entertain children with activities like crafts and hiking so that their parents can enjoy golf, spa days, and other hotel amenities geared to adults.

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts were first with the concept in 1984, when they began "Camp Hyatt," but other hotels and resorts now are following suit.

Bob Rauch, a professor at San Diego State University's School of Hospitality and Tourism, said, "Most resorts have added such programs within the past ten years." If they do not already run such programs, then they are probably testing whether the camps could be profit-makers, Rauch said.

Barry Brown of the Hotel Coronado reports that its Tent City Kids' Camps probably increases sales by 1 to 2%, which represents millions of dollars each year. Ted Kanatas, general manager of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in California, estimates that its camp program brings in about $1.5 million per year.
