Summer Camps for Special Needs Springing Up All Over the Country

Parents of special needs children are often at a loss for children's summer activities. Public schools can accommodate these children during the school year. However, during the summer, special needs children have not always had access to good summer programs. Often they are in daycare with children much younger than they are or attending day camps near home.

Now that is changing. There are now overnight summer camps that specialize in children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, autism, Asperger Syndrome, enuresis, hearing impairment, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cancer, arthritis, heart conditions, diabetes, asthma, spinal bifida, kidney disorders, AIDS, and more.

These camps often require extra staff and medical facilities. For example, Camp Wanakita, in Ontario, Canada, accepts children with hemophilia. A staff of nurses is available during the entire two-week session.

Camp Not-A-Choo in Arizona is one of many overnight camps for children with asthma. The Great Lakes Camp in Michigan is a place where burn survivors ages 7 to 17 years can support each another. Camp Aldersgate in Arkansas has free programs for children with cancer - friends and siblings can attend with them.

Camp Huntington, in the Catskills Mountains in New York, is one of the few special needs camps with a long history. It has been enrolling developmentally disabled children for 47 years. Executive Director Daniel Falk said that parents are often terrified of sending their special needs child to an overnight camp, but it can be a life-enhancing experience and a big step toward increased self-esteem and independence.
