Summer Camp: More than Memories

The crackle of a roaring campfire, the smell of toasting marshmallows, the sound of crickets chirping in the night. This may be all it takes to bring you back to the magic of a childhood camping experience.

Summer camp is all about great memories, fun and friends. But a camping experience offers far more than that. A recent study performed by Philliber Research Associates in conjunction with the American Camp Association (ACA) involved a survey of more than 5,000 families about their child's camping experience. The findings were overwhelmingly positive in regard to the skills that children gained through camping.

• Connect with the natural environment. Children can experience wide-open spaces, water, trees and wildlife, away from the bustle and pollution of the city.



• Learn how to communicate and cooperate with others who have different backgrounds and different ideas.



• Build life skills such as independence, resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility.



• Develop skills in activities such as water sports and swimming, basketball, soccer, archery, or horseback riding.



• Learn lifelong patterns of behavior including healthy eating patterns, good citizenship and caring for others.



• Connect with others who have similar needs or situations, such as a medical problem like asthma or a family situation such as loss of a parent.



• Develop lifelong friendships with others who return to camp year after year.



• Explore talents and interests in the arts.

Sage Walk

Sage Walk's wilderness program offers a powerful and significant approach to help your teen overcome emotional and behavioral problems. Our mission is to resolve family conflict in order to reunite families that have been torn apart by the behavioral problems of a troubled child. Sage Walk was chosen as the wilderness program for ABC's Brat Camp in part to their effective drug and alcohol education component to help teens experimenting with substances.
