Middle Class Kids Lose Less Learning Over Summers Than Poor Children

All children experience learning loss over the summer, but low-income students experience the most, according to a recent study by Harris Cooper, Director of Education at Duke University.

Dr. Cooper believes that 65% of the gap in learning loss between poor and affluent children can be explained by differences in summer learning experiences during the elementary school years. For example, middle and upper income children have access to stimulating experiences such as summer camps, vacations and museum activities.

All children regardless of income group lose about 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematics during the summer. However, disadvantaged students also experience significant losses in reading comprehension. Middle-class students actually increase their reading abilities slightly over the summer months.

When you combine losses in both math and reading, low-income students lose approximately three months of grade equivalency but middle and upper income students lose only one.
